    “American Airlines Employment Opportunities and
    Furlough Protection”

Exactly how this worked back in May 5, 1997 and thereafter, for the next 10 years?

Just in case the company tries to convince our guys of a substantial increase in flows with some tiny letters that say...”Furlough Protection”.

Does anybody remember who really benefited from this?

Overall, they had to come to eagle or go elsewhere, american pilots benefited the most while stopping the flow to aa for more than 10 years. For them who dont know.

The 824 came about because of this and the flowthru continued because of the 824. So in the end the eagle pilots were the winners. That said things were pretty rough with all the flowbacks though.

Really, you mean when the mec sold out those numbered guys so they could get to flow themselves, that was good.

I considered neither pilot group “winners”. The real winner was AMR who was able to manipulate the agreement both ways to their advantage when they desired. The value of ambiguous contractual language to management cannot be overstated. As for future concerns, it’s probably valid. One of my biggest criticism of this ALPA leadership was the willingness to undermine THE most important concept of unionized pilots and that is seniority.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a future consideration to grant additional seniority rights to non-Envoy pilots and that’s what those who leave Envoy and flow to AA are. After all, that was already done with with college flight instructors nowhere to be found on the Envoy pilots system seniority list. This would be especially expected if some of those getting that seniority are the ones negotiating for or approving it.
