Hereís an idea.... if you donít want us using those airports as an actual diversion alternate then donít f ing use them in the flight plan to save a few bucks.

Don't sign the release until you get an alternate that has AA service. Done.

That email was the most asinine thing I'v read all week! If they file me to a certain alternate, 20 miles away from destination airport, and only give me enough fuel to get to that alternate and I have to divert, then I'm going to that alternate... Don't want me to go there, then don't file it as my alternate... Simple as that! Do the dispatchers even think about this stupid crap!?!? "MDW is your alternate to ORD, and we only gave you enough fuel to go to MDW. Oh, ORD runways are closed for snow plowing, so divert to IND. Uh Oh! There's not enough fuel for that!!!" LOL! Screw that! Either give me a decent alternate with the fuel to get there, or accept that I'm going to divert to a place that I'll be parking at an FBO, and envoy can open up the purse to pay for thier services.

Ugh why are we even wasting our breath. Not rocket science guys. We have enormous pull regarding reading the weather and getting a practical alternate. Donít like it? Call the dispatcher and hash it out. Period

The way I see it is you have two choices.
    1. Go to the filed alternate and ďstick it to the manĒ as some of you seem to have a hard on to do.
Or 2 Be a proactive Captain and be thinking ahead. Before itís too late to consider another alternate that IS served by AAG, get in touch with dispatch and make it happen.
Diverting to any offline station has the potential of opening a YUGE can of worms and causing major headaches brought on the fuster cluck that is almost certain to ensue.

Keep in mind that the use of MDW or DAL when weather is 10SM but OVC020 is fine for fuel issues since you're most likely never going to divert. It's just there to make it legal. Now if weather is really crappy, they'll most likely give you a realistic alternate.

I agree with the last three posts. I guess I would need some backstory to get the bigger picture. Having to call dispatch to come up with a better alternate every single time would get old and tiresome.when the weather is 2000 ovc with good weather Iím ok with dal. But the way the email makes it sound is that someone had to divert to the alternate that was filed and encountered some Charlie Foxtrot because of this. Does this means every time we get dal as an alternate we should be calling the dispatcher to change it? I can see it now. ďItís a legal alternate why are you asking for a farther alternate captain?Ē Just switch it to one that works and is company preferred, take the fuel hit, and no issues. The planned alternate is both pilots and dispatchers responsibility. Since calling them while post flighting and preflighting and gate swapping and bathroom breaks and so on can cut the free time down to nil it would be nice for the dispatcher to take some of the workload of this to plan a better alternate than the usual short legal fields. As a side note- I have and do call a lot to talk to the dispatcher about fuel, routing, possible deviations and ďgame plansĒ on a regular basis so weíre all on the same page. Iíd like to say it always goes well when talking to them but there are one or two that get defensive and borderline combative when talking on the phone. Iíve never once had an issue regarding extra fuel though.

I agree. The day the hi6 came out though I called dispatch to change my alternate from DAL to the nearest weather approved aa/eagle station. They changed it/ added on 2500lbs of fuel and didnít say anything after I suggested why it should be changed. I plan to have all my alternates changed to AA/AE stations from here on. We have enough to worry about when going missed to the alternate , let alone worry about an hi6 that says ďI strongly enoucrage you to contact dispatch before going to the paper alternateĒ. So.. make it simple.... AA/AE alternates from here on out- period.

My class went on a tour of dispatch when we went through upgrade training. MR openly admitted that he hates talking on the phone and gets irritated as soon as he hears it ring. He also gave a speech about how he thinks us pilots worry too much about fuel.

I had a similar experience and heard two dispatcher complaining about a certain pilot that calls all the time. I know the visit was supposed to help build the teamwork and trust but it felt like quite the opposite. It would be nice is it was a shared responsibility instead of feeling like asking our parents for extra allowance.

And to add to my above post itís not all dispatchers that I feel this way with. Most are great to talk to and work well with pilots like talking about different alternates or routes. But some immediately start questioning your decision making and general knowledge. Itís a 2 minute phone call if we can get on the same page. Itís a 10 minute conversation with bad feelings on both sides of your argumentative.

I get IRRITATED when I am given 17 minutes of taxi in ORD, with snowflakes in the air, during the evening push...and then have to call to get it corrected. Meanwhile, at the outstation, you bring back 5000 ferry. Or how about the flight plan saying 36,000 at HULLS? That irritates me also.

Soooo don't sign the release. Call dispatch. Be a captain. I've filed asaps the last 5 times I've had Flight plans showing hulls at FL360. IT'S not realistic and dispatch is aware but don't care. I've emailed the head SOC guy over this issue. Of course, no response back and it's been a month.
