I had the Ariat ropers for a few years. They were marketed as pilot boots by Ariat themselves, and many of the reviews were by pie-luts. They did the job but started to show scuffs and deep scratches fairly early on. Never had an issue with the magnetometer, however.

I've worn both the ariats and Justin 3170's. Ice, rain, and glycol will destroy the leather soles on the Justin's quickly; you will not get a winter out of them if you are a FO. Ariats lasted 2 or 3 years... Another option is to get the 3170's and put vibram soles on them, not the heavy lugs but their winter sole. FWIW, ropers are the more comfortable heel.

Justin 3040s. Polish up nicely and come with a Vibram sole. Been wearing them for years, very comfortable. Hereís a link:

I think they came with a metal shanks so I just had the non-metal shanks from a donor pair of ropers installed.

I love the Justin's but the sole doesn't hold up to oil and glycol. My latest pair are Durango's they have an oil resistant sole and seem to wear well.

Do you mind if I ask how much/long the Shoe Hospital runs? Iíve been curious.

Under 10 mins if you catch them without a line. I want to say $7 for boots / $5 for shoes, cash only. Definitely worth it...they blow the shoe shine company at DFW out of the water. Pains me to say that as a Texan, but very true...they do everything correctly right up until they put some sort of weird leather conditioner on your boots after the Lincoln polish. Unsat.
