    Captain Upgrades

    1 Not allowed! Not allowed!
    Gentleman,

Lately we have seen folks showing up for upgrade, and they still have restrictions on their certificates. Those restrictions would be under 14 CFR 61.167 and possible the ICAO restriction if you had less than 1500TT. If you show up to class with those restrictions we will fill out a training report that you are not qualified to be a Captain. It is your responsibiltty once you meet the requirements for an unrestricted ATP to make an appointment with the FAA and get these restrictions removed. This must be done prior to coming to class for the upgrade. Envoy APD's can not remove these restrictions, it must be done by FAA.

This does not have anything to do with the circling restriction as all ATP's and Type Ratings issued in the past few years have had those added. But if you were less than 1500 TT or under 23 years of age you will have restrictions that you are responsible for removing before you attend upgrade class.

Cheers, and look forward to seeing you in DNR or for your MV and or LOE's.

But, but, but...they're millennials! Don't you know that they expect everything to be done for them?!?

That unfortunately seems to be the attitude we see. I put this out as a public service announcement, be prepared for what you bid for.
I was at an APD meeting today for 145 APD's. Our APM Dave Klominek has had exactly one pilot call him at the CMO to get this done.
It's free you just have to call and make an appointment....

I've heard stories from an APD about this happening. And when the APD brought it to the applicant's attention, they pretty much just shrugged and said "uhhhh okay, can't you fix it for me?". What a time to be alive...will there be a more official public service announcement forthcoming in the form of an HI6?

We have asked for that, so hopefully yes. I am just trying to be proactive and prevent some from showing up without it being taken care of.

I know you are attempting to attack my department with that comment. That fact is though that you can not be a Captain with those restrictions in place. Since you bid for and were awarded the upgrade it is your responsibility to be qualified. If you are not, you have just wasted a slot for someone who is. So how do we show the waste? We do a training report now the blame is where it belongs on the applicant for something they are not qualified for.

Is this so hard to understand? The ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language is a reqirement to Hold an ATP. Every current pilot holds that certificate, so please explain your reasoning.

Wow Dave Klominek! One of the best FAA guys I have ever met and worked with during my time at eagle. He will do whatever it takes to help you out as long a you are not a jerk. His wife was (several years ago) 145 CA. Good guy.
