American Airlines Signs New Agreement To Begin Large Regional Jet Flying

Large 76 Seat Regional Jets Will Join the American Fleet for the First Time in its History

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines announced today that it has signed a 12-year capacity purchase agreement with Republic Airways Holdings to provide large regional jet flying for the first time in the company's history. This agreement, which is subject to court approval, was enabled by the new pilot contract. It is designed to offer customers more choices with the right-size aircraft to match market demand, strengthen service from American's hubs and diversify its partnership with regional carriers.

"This is a significant milestone in our company's history," said Chuck Schubert, American's Vice President – Network Planning. "Establishing a large regional jet fleet has long been part of our business plan and this agreement is another example of how we are executing on that plan in a way that benefits our business and our customers. We will offer more flights at the right intervals throughout the day in key markets while providing more opportunities for customers to travel in the First Class cabin to key business markets."

Through the agreement, Republic Airways will acquire 53 Embraer E-175 jets featuring a two-class cabin with 12 First Class seats and 64 seats in the Main Cabin.

The aircraft, which will be branded with the newly revealed American Eagle livery and operated by the Republic Airlines subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, will phase into operation at approximately two to three aircraft per month beginning in mid-2013. All 53 aircraft are expected to be in operation by the first quarter of 2015.

The new agreement will further enhance and strengthen American's relationship with Republic Airways, a longtime partner of American Airlines and the largest operator of large Embraer jets. Republic's Chautauqua Airlines subsidiary operates regional jet service for American from its hub at Chicago O'Hare with 15 Embraer E-140 aircraft.

This has NO effect on the large RJ order eagle is going to announce in the next few months. This had been in the works for at least 6 months.

I think any elected rep who has seen OUR fleet plan would be very happy to tell you what we're getting and how many total airplanes, but nothing can be said due to NDA's. This news is surprising due to the amount of planes flown by RAH, but it was expected as it was talked about in roadshows that AMR want's to diversify their feed with large RJ's and eagle couldn't/won't get large birds in time. Plus, the winner of this bid had to supply their own aircraft with NO help from AMR.

Im glad that you know what's going to happen hear. The last year since bankruptcy, we have signed a horrid 8 year agreement played their game and yet we hear nothing. We close bases and park aircraft. We give flying to Skywest Asa and republic. We operate 150 captains understaffed and yet we hear nothing. I keep hearing rumors in the crew rooms of the positives. Yet all we hear and can confirm is the negatives.

Nothing can be said about the fleet plan due to NDA's and upper management can't say anything until everything is finalized with a meregr/non merger situation.

I'm sorry, but why the hell can they announce handing flying and aircraft to another company but not to us? I don't think it's an NDA, I think it's because we aren't getting any.

They're awarding more flying and aircraft to other carriers than we've lost. We're not going to grow.

Spare me your NDA crap. You know what moral is? Right now it is at an all time low. Eagle can't attract pilots. Pilots leaving in droves. Besides who's going to fly these planes the pilots they can't get our the pilots that are leaving?

You guys in the union should really be replaced or be the ones to explain this to the pilot group. We should be mad at you not the airline. The ones negotiating for us should never make remarks such as. "I am surprised at the size and length of that order." EGL ALPA you have done me and my pears a huge disservice.

It's lawyer stuff I've been told and I'm not a lawyer and yes we're getting more/new planes.

I hear all the frustration and I agree with all of you that this looks bad and we need SOMETHING made public soon!

I think even your contract indicates a smaller airline (2000+/- pilots), so that also shouldn't be of a surprise. I would expect most if not all the ERJ's to be replaced with a lesser number of larger RJ's, most likely more CJ7's and CJ9's for fleet commonality.

It's been alluded to many times that we are looking at 230 frames with 2100 pilots. If you take all the ATRs and 135s from our current fleet, there's your number. I wouldn't think any new a/c would show up until they start returning 140s. I would guess CRJ9s too.

I really don't think it's dependent on a merger. That's just another excuse to prolong their "decision" making process.

Our head office really fails miserably when it comes to employee relations. I haven't seen the mushroom treatment this bad since I've been here.
    Always smooth.

It is disappointing that this announcement is surprising to many of you. Even ALPA advised you that RFP had been requested from other regional carriers. Save your anger, the worst is yet to come.
